![]() Everyone, including he, has a dark side to which we turn to every once in a while. He is not the “good man” that he and everone thinks he is. Since YGM is an allegory to human nature and weakness versus socially-imposed virtue, what his entrance in the forest suggests is that, contrary to Goodman’s opinion of himself as a virtuous man, he is a man nevertheless with a natural curiosity to that which is forbidden and unknown, and with the same tendency to fall under the hands of evil as anyone else. This also seems to demonstrate a lack of self-awareness on Goodman Brown’s part he does not realize the significance of what he is doing. Knowing what he knows about himself, he ought not be shocked. ![]() Despite the fact that he believes his reputation in the town is as spotless as Goody Cloyse’s, Deacon Gookin’s, or his wife’s and that he himself has come to the forest, Goodman Brown is shocked that others with a similarly clean reputation are there as well. Goodman Brown’s reaction to seeing other supposedly religious and faithful people in the woods is ironic because he is surprised when he really should not be. When Brown gives himself a pass to have one more night of sin, he is not living faithfully by doing so, he abandons both his Faith and his faith. Of course, we will make mistakes and commit sins because we are human (and this is a typical Hawthorne theme), but we are not supposed to take time-outs from trying to follow God’s laws. We do not pick and choose the moments when we want to live faithfully we are supposed to try to live faithfully all the time. ![]() As he walks away from his wife, Faith, into the forest, he thinks,Īfter this one night, I’ll cling to her skirts and follow her to Heaven.
